Backlit Research

Niger River by Brent Stirton was taken on December 27, 2010

The mood of this photograph is very serene. This serenity is seen through the position of the man and the warmth of the backlighting colors. I like how the reflection of the colors symmetrically defines the horizon and the colors are in the sky and the ocean. The warm colors make the photograph very inviting,  and the man looks very calm, creating a very calm picture.

The of the piece is exciting and playful. There is so much energy captured in this picture; in the children and their actions, the water, and the blue and gold as they meet at the 'horizon'. The back lighting makes the photo so vibrant, as it hits the children, but also as it reflects off of the water at the bottom of the foutain. I like how the lighting puts a gold outline around the children and the water. The light being captured in the water is what makes this picture great. My eye immediately goes to the brightest part of the picture, the left of the child, but from that focal point is an explosion of life as my eye then goes to each child in the photo. This colors and the life of this photo simply captivates me.
