Breadth Process 7
I took these photos at the Forrest Haven Mental Institution in Catonsville, Maryland. I think the place allowed for me to take some very interesting photos, but I think with my editing I create more of a mood. With the darker textures and the more details I bring out in the photo the more eerie vibe that is created.

2 Studio Art Questions
Question #1: What is the central idea of your concentration?
The central idea of my concentration is candid photos of people. I am focusing on people in their natural state so every emotion is natural. By zooming in on the persons face I reveal the details of their being and possibly things about them. However, by capturing more of the background and their surrounds more is revealed about the person and their circumstances. Though much about a person can be conveyed even without their face in the picture. Taking a photo of the back of someone allows the viewer to see the world ahead of them. It is as if the viewer is seeing the world through the perspective of the person being photographed. The goal of each photo is to provoke a deeper understanding of the person being photographed, making the viewer question what that person is thinking or what it is like to be that person. Each picture gives a glimpse of a small fragment of that persons life in that moment.
Question #2: How does the work in your concentration demonstrate the exploration of your idea? You may refer to specific images as examples.
My photo of the little boy at the outdoor water area explores the idea of candid storytelling. He was not the least bit aware on my taking photos. His focus is outside of the photo as he leans in to see what his next move will be. The view does not see the full background, but the beads of water running down his back and the water that is infant of him provokes a better understanding of his surroundings. The photo conveys what the boy is thinking even with his back to the camera, he is waiting for his turn to run though the water. The contrast of my black and white photo of the guy with the mohawk is similar to the boy because their faces are not revealed, but the person creates the mood of the photo. The guy is not unaware my photographing because he is focused on what is ahead of him. His personal style: mohawk, earring, backpack, tells a story about who he is and how he sees himself. I wander around the streets waiting for something or someone and these people have an intention of which I remain unaware.

The central idea of my concentration is capturing people candidly (and maybe not) in a background that highlights their features, yet adds to the photo. To display people of different types of social, ethnic, and cultural backgrounds. To show different levels of emotion and provoke deeper thought of who people are. Focusing on different emotions and how they are being expressed by different people. By zooming in on the face I can show details, lines, and the little details that makeup a persons being. By fully capturing the person or larger parts I will show how their surrounding environment shapes them, whether that be in their clothing, their attitude, or general stance. People are my focus because a photo can capture one moment in a persons life, but their expression, their clothing, and their environment can tell a greater deal into who that person is. Each photo captures a different feeling and tells a different story whether it be one of whimsy or concern.
My work in my concentration demonstrates the exploration of my idea because I capture different types of people in a variety of location. I capture photos on a whim. Honestly, I don’t think to much about because when I do that it becomes forced I begin trying to make something that isn’t there. I walk on to the streets, or wherever I am taking photos that day, and I just shoot. I point my lens at anything that fascinates me. I am just exploring the world around me and I never know what I am going to get. I walk through crowds and snap pictures of people, typically those who don’t notice me and my camera. That is what makes it candid I can slip by unnoticed with my shutter on silent. My technique is winging it, I go with what I feel and I keep snapping until I feel like I've captured something. My concentration highlights the everyday moments in people’s lives, or for certain people that day. The beauty of it is, that this could be a very different day for them and I have no ways to know. I capture people as they are, it isn’t forced or fake because they don’t know I am there. If they notice then I capture confusion and occasionally the feeling of a delightful surprise, and for some not so delightful. I wander around the streets waiting for something and these people have an intention that I remain unaware of. I like the idea of highlighting an individual.

Prelim 6
I took all of these photos in New York City. I was really trying to capture people in the moment or in the middle of doing something. I particularly like the photo of the boy on the scooter, I like the way I edited it because of the blue haze on the photo. I like the orange tint the photo of the old people and the building. I really tried to focus on strong colors and composition in all of the photos. I like the concept of the people coming out of the subway. I blurred the black and white photo of the girl coming out of the elevator because she is not in the center of the photo, but I tried to make her the focus. I think the photos of the man and the dog is strong because of the angles and the strong source of light. I am going up to New York this weekend and hope to take more photos like these.

Concentration 5 prelim
These are some of the candid photos of people that I took in New York city last weekend. I am trying to capture people completely candid. If the photos look the same they are not I typically continuously snap photos, so there may be slight difference between them. Also, I am trying to experiment more with my editing.
